Stop Memorizing Isolated Words: Learn Chunks and Sound More Natural

|Viviana Oliveros

Many learners know hundreds of words but still freeze when they need to build a sentence. One practical solution is learning chunks: groups of words that frequently appear together, including expressions for giving opinions, asking for clarification, or buying time while thinking.

Instead of memorizing only “decision,” learn combinations such as “make a decision” and complete phrases you can reuse. Digital flashcards become more useful when they include a real sentence, audio, and a situation. Vocabulary then stops being a list and becomes a tool for conversation.

Practical takeaways:

  • Save complete expressions, not only translations.

  • Organize phrases by situations: work, travel, shopping, and social life.

  • Create your own example every time you learn a new chunk.
